"Man on the Ground" - The Reviews So Far
February 13th 2012 sees the release of my 2nd album ‘Man on the Ground’. It is available to download from ITunes and other disreputable online stores, or you can buy the CD (or limited addition LP) directly from the Mike Marlin superstore here. My close friends (both of them) think the album is amazing - but if you wondered what other people have been saying then here are some of the reviews so far:
"Mike writes from a new perspective. Quirky and compelling, his songs have the extraordinary qualities of being both fresh and mature." Eleanor McEvoy
"A subtle, heartfelt record that is an absolute pleasure to listen to. You'd have to be made of stone for this album not to bring a smile to your face."
Stereo Board
"As you take the journey through Marlin’s storytelling listening to the album, it becomes a realisation how beautiful the songs are. This album is a great second contribution, and I highly recommend anyone to listen to it. It may have taken him 50 years to release something, but it is obviously never too late for someone with great talent."
AltSounds
"Relentlessly pushing the listener through an emotional journey, not only delivered by the music, but also embedded in the lyrics. Outstanding; listening to the album draws you in and delivers its message plain and simple. Just like when your parents used to tell you a bedtime story, Mike Marlin is the father who should teach through music."
SouthSonic
"The further you travel through this album, the more beautiful the songs become. Mike Marlin really captures life in his music, with each song being an epic ballad that caresses your ears."
Music News
"Man On The Ground is one of the first must have albums of 2012 as it is just class from beginning to end."
Female First
"Man on the Ground is a reflective, thoughtful and deeply personal album. Despite 2012 only being two months old, marks an impressive statement which musically it may be difficult to top."
Grumpy Rocker
"The understated gentle beauty of the song and the catchy yet meaningful lyrics make any attempt by Coldplay to touch those among us who do bravely accept the onset of an age upwards of 27 look like cynical 90s Disney twaddle."
AAA Music
"A story of the American dream, only it’s happening in Britain. This Town is a slow burner and does it’s darnedest to get under your skin."
Music Eyz
"Marlin's voice is a cross between his hero David Bowie and the Silver Jews' David Berman, and on ‘This Town' he croons lazily over a hazy Wurlitzer. Without even having heard his upcoming new album you find yourself rooting for him."
BBM Live
"Swelling from subtle and sad to heart felt and grand ‘The Magician’ reveals a darker more accomplished sound for Marlin, setting the standard for the forthcoming record and expressing a more personal and ambitious approach to song writing."
MusicMuso
"There's no smoke and mirrors, deception or trickery: Marlin's all about quality songwriting, but the fuller arrangement and the epic chorus is the perfect foil for his grizzly delivery."
Whisperin and Hollerin
"Absolutely lovely track that I’ve played over and over since I got it. He’s got an amazing voice with real heartfelt emotions tugging at your heart as it chugs along. Can’t wait to hear more from him."
Off The Radar
"The bleak, poetic quality of Mike Marlin’s latest single – ‘The Magician’ – is simply enchanting. If Marlin’s upcoming album – ‘Man On The Ground’ – displays this kind of deepness and warmth then he could well be Britain’s answer to The National."
